Manual focus 35mm underwater camera released by Nikon in 1984. Rugged aluminum alloy body with interchangeable underwater lenses. Some lenses work only underwater, and some work either above or below water. The shutter is electronically controlled & quartz-timed and the camera has automatic exposure. The camera is rated for depths up to 50m, but water tightness cannot be guaranteed nowadays. Take underwater at your own risk, but be sure to re-grease the O-rings before doing so. Metal body available in black/orange/green.
What began life as the Calypso camera designed by famed diver Jacques Cousteau eventually became the Nikonos, Nikon's line of underwater, interchangeable lens viewfinder cameras. Over time, Nikon added automatic exposure and a variety of flash features and accessories to the Nikonos cameras.
The final model (Nikonos RS) was a fully-featured, autofocus, auto exposure SLR with a new, proprietary lens mount! These cameras are extremely rare.
