Model Details
Manual focus telephoto lens made for R-mount 35mm SLR cameras introduced by Leica in 1998. Leica made two versions of this lens. This is the first version that is only compatible with the APO-Extender-R 2X. The second version from 2003 is also compatible with the APO-Extender-R 1.4X. Leica made about 1500 lenses of this first version and offered modifications to accommodate the APO-Extender-R 1.4X. The shape of the aperture blades was also changed between the two models. On this model, they sometimes produce the “ninja star” bokeh effect, while on the 2003 model, the blades became more curved to mitigate this effect. This lens has a ROM Cam mount. ROM Cam lenses have a stepped cam, like on the 3rd-Cam, plus electronic contacts. They are compatible with all R-series cameras. The electronic contacts are only supported on the R8/R9. They will not fit Leicaflex cameras. Metal body available in black (11273).

Leica introduced the R system in 1964 as an alternative to their M mount rangefinders and as a response to the successful SLR systems of the time, including Nikon F and Pentax M42. The R system was produced, with some modifications, until 2009.
Most R mount lenses can be used on any R mount camera, but there are compatibility issues with both the oldest and newest lenses. Over time, Leica added features and technology to the lenses that made them incompatible.
