Nikon began life as Nippon Kōgaku Kōgyō, a humble manufacturer of binoculars, in 1917. Over the coming decades, they would do optical work for the government of Japan, create photographic lenses for other companies, and eventually create cameras of their own.
Nikon became a household name in photography in 1959 when they released the original Nikon F. This camera single-handedly made SLRs the dominant camera type and put Nikon atop the professional market for the next few decades.
